The Middle of the Seoul City

In Korean, my name means the middle of the city. My grandfather made my name when he moved to downtown Seoul. To separate and interpret my name, JOO means a pillar, like a mainstay and Kyoung means Seoul. Therefore, the meaning of my name is the mainstay of Seoul. When I first heard my name, I think I was happy because I had only heard the word baby. I have a real name now! I thought.

Jookyoung is also not a common name in South Korea. In addition, many people cannot pronounce my name correctly in the U.S. Sometimes, I feel my name is not cherished, so one day I thought about making the nickname for my stay in the States, but I decided to throw that thought away. Because when my family called my name, I felt like I was alive, warm, and in my hometown. Also, I feel special when I write down my name in any attendance. There are never two Jookyoungs in South Korea or the U.S. I guess. In addition, my name is not used for a girl’s name in South Korea or even Asia. It is an old tradition that a woman cannot use the boldest name, only a boy can have it. However, I have a brave name, so I am proud of my name and thanks to my grandfather. Although, in South Korea, the name Jookyoung means that people work during the day and study hard at night. That means it is a hard-working person. Therefore, I want to try to make this name something positive when said by more people.
