Names or Codes

Jiawei Li is a very common name in China. It is 李嘉伟 in Hanzi. Li is my family name. Jia means good or lucky. Wei means brilliant or great. The name was given to me by my parents. I think it’s not very special for me because there are thousands of people that have same name as me, not only in English, but also in Chinese characters. I don’t know if there is a story about my name that happened before I was born. I have one sibling; he is my little brother. There is only one character in his name different to mine. His name is Jiajun Li, 李嘉浚. I think my parents gave him this name because of ease, but they sometimes call us by the wrong name. Sometimes when I talk to my mother in phone, I can hear that she calls my brother by my name.

In my opinion, people’s names are not meaningful. Rather, I think names are more like codes for people. People give their children names to call them. If we change names to numbers, nothing would be different.

  1. I agree with a lot of things that you mentioned. Sometimes i wonder if we ever start using numbers for each person instead of a name. My mother mix up my name with my siblings so i can totally understand that.

  3. Your right, if we have numbers by names nothing would be different but you have a very cute name and it sound really cute, so I think that maybe it wouldn't be any different but it wouldn't sound as cute as the names.

  4. Your name isgood! There is not bad with popular names. Indeed, as you said, the name is just a sign. I think sometimes the name is more representative of a person's spirit.
